Manic Depression ... Anxiety, Depression, Stress

New Research into Depressive Disorders is Proving
Beneficial for Manic Depression Sufferers...

Manic depression, also known as Bipolar Disorder, is classified as a type of mood disorder that goes beyond the day's ordinary ups and downs. Manic depression is characterized by episodes of depression, mania, or mixed states that typically recur and become more frequent across the life span. Individuals usually suffer periods of desolation, causing lethargy or bursts of mania characterized by excessive excitement and activity or both depression and mania combined into a 'mixed state'.

A person diagnosed to suffer from manic depression may not always find a logical reason for their dark feelings and may feel overwhelmed, discouraged and hopeless. Depression is a serious condition that, if left untreated, may manifest into an extreme disorder with crippling physical and emotional symptoms and even lead to suicide, but the good news is some recent research into depressive disorders is leading the way in changing all that.

Manic Depression Statistics

Depression PointerManic depression typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood and the average age of the onset for the first manic episode is early 20s.

Depression Pointer More than 2.3 million American adults that is about 1.2% of the population in a given year, suffer from manic depression.

Depression Pointer In most patients each manic, depressive or mixed state episode (especially early in the course of illness) are separated by well periods during which there are few to no symptoms.

Understanding the Causes of Manic Depression

Manic depression, like many other depressive disorders, is characterized by physical symptoms; but the cause of the illness itself resides within the thought processes of the mind. Depression is the accumulation and cyclic self-reinforcement of destructive negative thoughts and emotions resulting in (often severe) physical and psychological symptoms. A typical depressive episode can be broken down into three major elements.

Depression PointerThe trigger event(s) - A negative experience or series of experiences, events or circumstances;
Depression PointerThe causal thoughts - Recurring irrational negative thoughts and emotions surrounding the trigger event(s);
Depression PointerThe physical/emotional symptoms - The human bodies reaction to its ‘perceived’ environment.

Depression usually begins with a series of negative thoughts and emotions that progressively accumulate and compound. One negative thought manifests another, fueling the depressive episode, until the sufferer finds themselves completely overrun by depression with very few (if any) periods of relief. These thought processes result in continually compounding a sufferer’s depression and rendering it virtually impossible to overcome without the correct knowledge and guidance.

Treatments for Manic Depression

Unfortunately, the treatments for depression that are practiced by most health care professionals are focused around utilizing drugs to control the physical symptoms. While this approach can be a welcome temporary relief for suffers, medication alone can only 'mask' the physical symptoms; it will never cure the condition. In most cases once the medication is denied, the physical and emotional symptoms return. So how can you eliminate manic depression and reclaim your life? You need to change the way you think!
